The Myanmar Army has carried out large-scale deployments of troops from central and northern regional commands to reinforce garrisons across the contested northeast of the country. The move suggests major ground offensives against two ethnic insurgent forces are likely follow in the coming weeks. Local sources and a well-informed Myanmar military analyst noted to IHS Jane's that in the last week of February at least three unusually large convoys carrying troops and munitions and in some cases towing artillery moved from staging points near the northern city of Mandalay up onto the Shan State plateau, where sporadic hostilities have been under way since late last year. The largest convoy consisted of 93 trucks, another of 83 and a third of 65.
