The Indian Army has commissioned its first Gurkha Rifles (GR) battalion comprising only locally domiciled Gurkhas. The Sixth Battalion of the First Gurkha Rifles (6/1GR) of about 700 soldiers formally came into being on 31 March at the 14 Gurkha Training Centre in Sab-athu in the northern Himalayas.
