French firm Safran has agreed to sell its Morpho Detection subsidiary to the Smiths Group, the company announced on 21 April. Smiths will pay Safran USD710 million for the company, with the deal set to close in early 2017. Morpho Detection, part of Safran's Morpho business group, is a US-based company specialising in explosive-detecting equipment it sells to a range of security agencies and companies. Smiths also produces detection devices and the two companies will have some overlapping areas of their portfolios. A Smiths official told IHS Jane's the company would continue to compete against Morpho until the deal is completed, but that the company hopes the combined group will develop innovative solutions.
