Having first entered service with the US Air Force (USAF) in the late 1970s, the E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) has been able to maintain its position as the yardstick by which all other airborne early warning aircraft (AEW) are measured through a rolling programme of upgrades that continue through to this day and which will carry on over the coming years and decades.
