Russia is developing a new self-propelled gun (SPG) called Lotos (Lotus) for Russia's Airborne Forces (VDV) and Naval Infantry, a Russian defence industry source told IHS Jane's at Eurosatory 2016. "Previously, the Russian Precision Machine-Building Scientific Research Institute (TsNII-TochMash) design bureau was designing the replacement for the ageing 2S9 SPG," the source said. "The work was ceased, as Russia's defence ministry was not satisfied with the results regarding reliability of the system. Then, the MoD [Ministry of Defence] decided to change the chassis, to introduce more strict requirements to the SPG, and to enhance the system's combat effectiveness.
