Lockheed Martin and the US Department of Defense (DoD) announced that measures first announced two years ago to drive down costs and increase the affordability of the F-35 Lightning Ⅱ Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme are to be extended and new ones implemented. Speaking at the Farnborough airshow on 11 July, programme chiefs said that the 'Blueprint for Affordability' scheme announced at the same in event in 2014 is to be extended for a further two years, while a new 'Sustainment Cost Reduction Initiative' is to be implemented to generate further savings in the multinational fifth-generation fighter programme.
