The US military confirmed on 29 July that it plans to return about 4,000 ha (15.4 sq miles) of land in Okinawa to the Japanese government. The land is part of the Northern Training Area used for jungle warfare training by US forces. It will be the largest area returned to the Japanese government since 1972, reducing the amount of US-administered land on the island by 17%, according to a press release issued by the US Forces Japan (USFJ) Public Affairs Office at Yokota Air Base.
