The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) will undergo new training to enable them to more effectively participate in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions, Defence Minister Tomomi Inada said on 24 August, according to Kyodo news agency. The JSDF were restricted in their operational capabilities until controversial revisions to the nation's security laws were enacted in March. The training will be for two new assignments: rescuing UN personnel under attack and jointly defending a base with troops from other nations. The 5th Infantry Regiment will be the first to undergo the training ahead of its November 'deployment on a peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
