Plans to transfer the British Army's fleet of Britten-Norman Islander and Defender aircraft to the Royal Air Force by 2018 are being developed by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The proposal is part of a series of economy measures required to free up GBP11 billion (USD14.6 billion) to be re-invested in hew capabilities. The Army Air Corps' fleet of Islander AL1 and Defender AL2 aircraft are used to provide surveillance support to special forces operations overseas and counter-terrorist operations within the United Kingdom.
