The US Navy (USN) is trying to maintain a presence in the Arctic, where sea lanes are open for far longer than they were in the past, but other global demands are proving more pressing. "We'll get up there as often as we can, but the demands on the navy in other areas are acute," Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson said on 12 September.
