More than 24 years have passed since the violent break-up of Yugoslavia in 1992 that launched a series of wars continuing until late 1999, when the second of two NATO interventions in the region forced an end to hostilities in Kosovo. While peace has largely prevailed within the borders of former Yugoslavia since then, with modest prosperity taking root, the post-war years have not been entirely kind to the region. Challenges remain in terms of ethnic and social differences, while the lingering effects of the global recession that kicked off in 2008 continue to restrain economic development.
