Open-architecture systems are the key to the future of electronic warfare (EW), with technology that can quickly evolve to meet a rapidly changing threat environment, according to Thomas Quast, director of strategy and business development at Raytheon Electronic Warfare Systems. Quast envisages a future in which a system can be rapidly programmed to go from 'X' to 'Y' in terms of the functions it performs. "That's not to say that it just happens overnight, but the point is that you don't have to go bend metal," he told IHS Jane's. "We have that modular flexibility to go do that kind of stuff faster; that's clearly a theme."
