The concept design for the new Fregate de Taille Intermediate (FTI) for the French Navy was unveiled by French defence minister Jean-Yves Le Drian at the Euronaval exhibition in Paris on 18 October. Conceived by French shipbuilder DCNS to provide the navy with five new medium-size frigates, the FTI programme was announced in mid-2015 and was included in plans set out under the multi-year Loi de Program-mation Militaire (LPM) for the 2014-19 period. EUR3.8 billion (USD4.2 billion) has been put aside for the five frigates. The first ship is planned for delivery in 2023: a programme timeline that is acknowledged by the defence ministry as ambitious.
