France and the United Kingdom have formally committed to proceed with the next stages of the joint Maritime Mine Counter-measures (MMCM) programme. The programme covers the development, build, and qualification of two prototype off-board MCM systems for trials and evaluation by the French Navy (Marine Nationale) and the UK Royal Navy (RN). An industry team headed by Thales was selected in March 2015 to lead the jointly funded MMCM programme, with a contract for the first stage of definition work awarded that month by European defence procurement agency OCCAR on behalf of France's Direction Generale de l'Armement (DGA) and the UK's Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation.
