The US Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, said on 25 October that Washington's goal of persuading North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons is "probably a lost cause", the Associated Press reported. "They are under siege and they are very paranoid, so the notion of giving up their nuclear capability... is a non-starter with them," Clapper said in New York, adding that the best the US could hope for was a cap on Pyongyang's capabilities.
