When Taliban militants stormed a school in Pakistan's northern city of Peshawar and killed more than 140 teenagers in December 2014, the country's army was forced to alter a long-held course. Since joining the US-led 'war on terror' following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, DC, Pakistan's top generals had resisted Western pressure to launch an all-out campaign against terrorist sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal area bordering Afghanistan.
