Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated after Islamabad claimed that seven of its soldiers were killed on 13 November as a result of shelling by the Indian Army (IA) across the countries' disputed border in the northern region of Kashmir. IA sources told IHS Jane's that the cross-border exchange of 81 mm and 120 mm mortars and heavy-calibre small arms fire intensified on IS November along the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the two countries. The Pakistan Army's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate said in a statement that the soldiers had died in the Bhimber sector "in a ceasefire violation by Indian troops", adding that Pakistani troops "responded to unprovoked Indian firing", targeting Indian posts "effectively".
