More burden sharing among the European allies for NATO's security and a clarification of the alliance's tasks toward its southern perimeter are among the priorities the allies must tackle in the run-up to the next gathering of NATO leaders in mid-2017, says Sir Adam Thomson, who just completed his tenure as the United Kingdom's ambassador to NATO. Indeed, these challenges "will endure beyond the next summit", Thomson told IHS Jane's on 3 November: his last working day at the alliance. Thomson has taken up new duties as director of the London-based European Leadership Network, where defence policy will be a major focus of his work.
