The Australian government has issued a request for tenders (RfT) to three shortlisted contenders for 12 steel-hulled offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) that are set to replace the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) 13-strong fleet of Armidale-class aluminium-hulled patrol craft at a cost of about AUD3 billion (USD2.28 billion). Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said in a statement on 30 November that the RfT requires each tenderer to develop an 'Australian industry capability plan'. This means that each tenderer will have to outline how it plans to transition its existing supply chains to Australian supply chains and how Australian suppliers would be integrated into the tenderer's global supply chains.
