Armed forces around the world are experiencing varying degrees of success with using high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as fiscal constraints and airspace restrictions continue to hamper procurement and deployment. The community is now benefiting from commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology derived from the private sector, where the likes of Google and Facebook continue to develop HALE UAVs as well as high-altitude pseudo-satellites (HAPS), which are designed to provide connectivity to remote and deprived areas of the globe.
