The US Department of Defense (DoD) has announced further force reductions in Europe but also revealed plans to base two Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning Ⅱ Joint Strike Fighter squadrons at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom from 2020. Consolidation of some US infrastructure in Europe, part of the European Infrastructure Consolidation (EIC) process, would include returning 15 sites to host nations, the Pentagon said in an 8 January statement. In total the EIC and F-35 basing decisions "will result in a net decrease of approximately 2,000 US military and civilian personnel in the UK over the next several years", and that deficit was "primarily due to the removal of about 3,200 US personnel from RAF Mildenhall, which will be offset by the addition of about 1,200 US military personnel who will be permanently stationed alongside the two F-35 squadrons going to RAF Lakenheath", the DoD said.
