The US Navy (USN) is working its way through specifications for a new radar to help reduce costs on new-construction nuclear-powered aircraft carriers while providing a common system for future amphibious assault ships and for backfitting its existing Nimitz-class carriers. Rear Admiral Thomas J Moore, programme executive officer for carriers at Naval Sea Systems Command, said that the navy is planning to release a request for proposals (RfP) around March for off-the-shelf radars intended for its second and third Ford-class carriers. The new radar, to be called the Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR), will supplant the Dual Band Radar, originally acquired for the navy's Zumwalt-class destroyer programme and currently fitted on board the lead Ford-class carrier, Gerald R Ford (CVN 78).
