Naval Sea Systems Command (NAV-SEA) is preparing to execute three major test events for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme in 2015, US Navy (USN) officials said on 13 January. Initial operational test and evaluation (IOTE) of the surface warfare (SuW) mission package and the mine countermeasures (MCM) mission package will be conducted on board the navy's two commissioned Independence-variant LCS vessels. The aluminium trimarans also will be put through their paces during an eight-month test event for the Independence seaframe IOTE. USS Coronado (LCS 4) will host the SuW mission package IOTE off southern California, while USS Independence (LCS 2) will conduct the MCM mission package IOTE in the Gulf of Mexico. For the seaframe IOTE, lead ship Independence will conduct tests in the Gulf of Mexico.
