Despite seemingly cordial relations between China's PLAN and the Indonesian Navy (Tentera Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Laut/TNI-AL), tensions could be developing between Jakarta and Beijing over the Natuna Islands: a cluster of 272 islands at the southern tip of the South China Sea that have a land area of 2,631 km~2 and sit on Indonesia's maritime borders with Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Indonesia is not among the states disputing ownership of the Spratly and Paracel island groups, but Beijing's dashed-line claim overlaps with Jakarta's push for its own exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Natuna Islands region.
