The view from Tallinn, less than 200 miles from the Russian frontier, is currently clouded with concerns over Russia. Sven Mikser, Estonia's defence minister since March 2014 (and previously between 2002 and 2003), is understandably wary about his eastern neighbour. "When we look at how [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has, at least twice in the past 10 years, used military power to achieve his political goals, then obviously that's something that we have to take very seriously," he told IHS Jane's. "We are obviously very concerned about the newly aggressive policies of Putin: the aggression against a neighbouring sovereign state, the annexation of Crimea, [and] the involvement of Russia's military in the fighting in eastern Ukraine gives us all concern. It's a direct challenge to the whole European security architecture," he surmised. However, Estonia has "full confidence in our [NATO] allies... but obviously we would like to do everything possible to avoid a scenario by which Article Five will be activated", he said, referring to the clause in the treaty that commits the allies to collective defence.
