An inter-service agreement between the Austrian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of the Interior (BMI) will make helicopters from the Bundesheer (Federal Army) available to the two special police squads of the Einsatzkommando Cobra (EKO Cobra), the BMI's primary counter-terrorism/special operations unit, during periods of heightened security alert, IHS Jane's has learned. The move comes in the wake of the Islamist attacks in Paris in January and is designed to provide a faster and more robust response to a potential terrorist threat, since the BMI operates only 16 small Airbus Helicopters EC135s and AS350/355s that cannot accommodate larger squads and are not hardened against small arms fire.
