French company DCNS announced on 15 April that it had begun work on the first of four Gowind 2500 corvettes for Egypt. "Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled in 2017, less than four years after the contract was signed last summer," it said, adding that the other three vessels would be built in Egypt by 2019 through the transfer of construction technology. The Gowind 2500 is 102 m long, with a displacement of 2,600 tonnes, a maximum speed of 25 kt, a range of 3,700 n miles (6,800 km) at 15 kt, and accommodates a crew of 65, including a helicopter detachment.
