The Brazilian Navy's Ships Project Centre (CPN) has been contracted to design a 500-tonne patrol ship through an award placed in April. Brazil's naval project management company (Empresa Gerencial de Projetos Navais: EMGE-PRON) issued the contract for a vessel designated NPa 500-BR (Navio Patrulha 500 toneladas Brasil) that is to be developed over an 11-month timeframe. The current plan is to build 20 ships, EMGEPRON told IHS Jane's. However, a potential contract is dependent on the navy's budget and ability to place the work with local shipbuilders. The design will also be available for export.
