Sudan's air defences fired on a reconnaissance aircraft just north of the capital Khartoum late on 5 May, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). In an initial Arabic-language statement, MoD spokesman Colonel Al-Sawarmi Khalid Saad said: "The anti-air defences in the Wadi Sayyidna military zone confronted a bright target late last night", referencing an unidentified light that was spotted in the sky and engaged. In a second statement, released a few hours later, he described the target as a "low-flying light-emitting" and "photographic reconnaissance object", suggesting it may have been an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). He added that some of its wreckage had landed on residential areas, but no one was harmed.
