Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) was created in 2010 as part of the reorganisation of the NATO command structure. Based in Izmir, Turkey, in peacetime LANDCOM is responsible for training, readiness, standardisation, and interoperability of NATO land forces, but as LANDCOM commander Lieutenant General John W Nicholson told IHS Jane's, this role shifts during a conflict. "In wartime or crisis, Allied Land Command becomes the Land Component Command. We command up to three corps from NATO under one of the Joint Force Commands. So, in a major joint operation plus [MJO+], like an Article 5 collective defence of the alliance, Allied Land Command would have an operational role."
