The officer in charge of acquiring the US Navy's (USN's) new nuclear-powered aircraft carriers told reporters on 15 June that the Ford-class programme is flagged to receive USD25 million in research and development (R&D) funds beginning in fiscal year 2017 (FY 2017) for innovations to help cut shipbuilding costs. Rear Admiral Thomas J Moore, the programme executive officer for carriers, said the funding's intent is to produce innovations in ship construction processes, materials, and other technologies to help reduce the Ford-class carrier's acquisition cost. The effort aims for substantial reductions similar to those in the navy's Virginia-class attack submarine acquisition.
