BAE Systems Australia has confirmed to IHS Jane's that it will refrain from bidding for the Australian government's tender to design and build patrol boats for 13 Pacific Island states because the programme is "not economically viable". Outlining the rationale of its decision, which could result in further job cuts at the company's Williamstown shipyard in Victoria, a spokesperson said on 17 June that the programme to replace the current fleet of patrol boats would not help the company maintain core capabilities.
