General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has handed over to the US Navy (USN) a third Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) that is also the first configured as an Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB). Based on the Alaska-class tanker design, the 223 m Lewis B Puller (MLP 3/AFSB1) was modified to include a 52,000 ft2 flight deck for MH-53 and MH-60 helicopters. The navy also plans to upgrade the flight deck for US Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys. The AFSB setup is also meant to support mine countermeasures, patrol craft, and special operations forces.
