The Afghan Air Force (AAF) is to beef up the armament of its MD Helicopters Inc (MDHI) MD 530F Cayuse Warrior helicopters with air-to-surface rockets, the US Department of Defense (DoD) disclosed on 13 July. The seven-tube M260 launcher accommodating 70 mm (2.75 inch) rockets is to be integrated onto the 'Little Bird'-derivative helicopters under a USD13.2 million contract awarded by the US Army. In total 19 helicopters will have the rocket system added to a mission equipment package (MEP) that already features twin FN Herstal 12.7 mm (.50 cal) Heavy Machine Gun Pods (HMPs). According to the DoD, the integration, which will include installation of fixed forward weapon sights, will be complete by 12 July 2016.
