As the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) nears initial operating capability, the US Marine Corps (USMC) has begun preparing pilots and crews for the aircraft's first operational deployment off US Navy (USN) large-deck amphibious assault ships. To ready its fleet to set sail with the new fifth-generation aircraft in late 2017, the USN has been upgrading its Wasp-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) ships and acquiring the new aviation-centric America-class landing helicopter assult (LHA) ships to not only accommodate and support F-35B squadrons, but also to optimise the data the aircraft will send back to the ships' combat information centres.
