Latvia has decided to buy FIM-92 Stinger man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS) from the United States, the country's chief of defence staff has stated. Lieutenant General Raimonds Graube made his comments on state TV after returning from a visit to the United States, noting that a procurement project for the MANPADS is set to begin in 2016. Speaking to IHS Jane's on 4 August, a spokesperson for the Latvian Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed Lt Gen Graube's comments but added, "At the moment we cannot specify the amount of the air-defence systems that Latvia will buy, nor the money that is needed to buy them; however, it depends on the government's approved defence budget for the next year."
