Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) on 31 August submitted a USD89.32 million budgetary proposal for an indigenous submarine design contract to the island's legislative Yuan. According to the MND, the Republic of China Navy (RoCN) plans to launch the four-year programme in 2016. Taiwan's government approved plans for a design contract to build submarines on 29 December 2014, while earlier this year the RoCN confirmed the programme will be for four 1,200- to 3,000-tonne diesel-electric submarines to replace its two ageing Dutch-built 2,600-tonne Hai Lung-class SSKs.
