Russia and Iran are co-ordinating their military support to Syria's President Bashar Assad in an effort to prevent the collapse of his forces, according to a senior Israeli source. The source said the plan was finalised when Major General Qassem Suleimani, a senior commander in Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corp (IRGC), met Russian president Vladimir Putin in August. The IRGC has now deployed an infantry force with "hundreds of soldiers" to Syria to assist pro-government forces, the source said. Logistics units from the Russian military have been deployed to Syria's coastal region to prepare for the arrival of fighter jets and combat helicopters that will be used against rebel forces when they arrive, the source added. US sources say the Russian build-up is taking place at the naval aviation base next to Basel Assad International Airport in Latakia province. Washington is reportedly encouraging countries in southeast Europe to ban Russian flights to Syria; from their airspace.
