Selex ES unveiled its Falcon Shield counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system at DSEI 2015. The Falcon Shield system is designed to detect and defeat micro- and mini-TJAVs. It uses a scalable and modular architecture to provide protection to any size of location - from small-scale VIP, patrol, or convoy protection (at a manportable or vehicle-portable level) to critical infrastructure or military bases. The new product has been an entirely company-funded effort over the past three years and has been announced when fully mature and available for purchase. Within a Selex ES command-and-control (C2) software/ management system a range of sensor and effector modules can be installed to provide any scale of counter-UAV protection required. Whichever subsystems are used, the Falcon Shield operates on a five-stage principle. The first stage, 'Find', provides area coverage of a protected location to monitor potential threats. This typically involves a radar combined with electronic frequency monitoring. This find stage can locate both potential airborne threats and the ground stations that they are controlled from.
