Japan for the first time has revealed in some detail its proposals to design and construct the replacement for the Royal Australian Navy's Collins-class submarine fleet under Project SEA 1000. Addressing an industry briefing at a Sea Power conference in Sydney on 6 October and at a subsequent meeting with media, senior Japanese government and industry representatives signalled a fresh approach to early engagement with Australian industry and disclosed plans to establish specialist design, training, and sustainment centres in both countries.
