The commanding general for US Army Europe (AREUR) told IHS Jane's on 13 October that he is concerned about intelligence shortfalls on Russian military movements as well as US budget instability affecting the army's ability to continue deterring aggression and supporting NATO assurance missions in the region. Speaking at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual symposium in Washington, DC, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges told IHS Jane's that one specific challenge AREUR faces is "a lack of indicators and warning in the intelligence capabilities, when you look at how fast and how far the Russians can move a lot of stuff on very short notice".
