The Afghan Air Force (AAF) is to procure additional Mil Mi-35 (Mi-25V) 'Hind' assault helicopters to augment the Sierra-Nevada Corporation/Embraer A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft that are due to enter service in early 2016, Russian media disclosed on 9 October. The type had been expected to be withdrawn from service as the A-29 came online, with the few 'Hinds' currently in service being retired due to serviceability issues. However, the Izvestia news agency quoted Russia's presidential special envoy to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, as saying that Moscow shortly expects to sell "a few" Mi-35s to the Afghan government.
