Years of speculation about a Saudi acquisition of one of the two types of Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) operated by the US Navy came to an end on 20 October, when the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the kingdom had requested the sale of four vessels based on Lockheed Martin's monohull Freedom class, rather than Austal's trimaran Independence class. The DSCA said the estimated cost of the four Multi-Mission Surface Combatants (MMSCs) and associated weapons, sensors and support services was USD11.25 billion.
