The commanding general of the US Army's 2nd Infantry Division (2ID) has described the recent mini-crisis between North and South Korea as an "intensely instructive period for everyone" in the US military on the Korean peninsula. The crisis began on 4 August when two Republic of Korea (RoK) Army sergeants on patrol in the DMZ were severely injured when a landmine exploded. Seoul subsequently blamed North Korea for emplac-ing the mine and began broadcasting propaganda across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates North and South Korea for the first time in years. The North responded on 20 August by firing an artillery round south; the RoK Army in turn fired 29 artillery rounds back at the North. The crisis ended with a . series of agreements between the two Koreas to reduce military tensions and to hold a number of family reunions.
