The Brazilian Army's Department of Science and Technology (DCT) was due by the end of November to open 'best and final offers' (BAFOs) from two local contractors, meant to fulfil the service's 4x4 VBMT-LR (Viatura Blindada Multitarefa - Leve de Rodas) lightweight armoured multirole vehicle programme, the army's Projects Management Office has told IHS Jane's. Iveco Latin America is competing with its Light Multirole Vehicle and Avibras is teamed with Renault Trucks Defense (RTD) to submit the Tupi (a modification of RTD's Sherpa Light Scout). Those companies were shortlisted and invited to compete by DCT's Manufacturing Directorate, and submitted sealed BAFOs on 10 September. The vehicles were extensively tested at the army's Evaluations Center.
