Saudi Arabia has reached an agreement with France and Lebanon to provide USD3 billion to purchase French military equipment for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). Lebanese President Michel Suleiman announced the Saudi aid package in a televised speech on 29 December, saying Riyadh's "generous assistance" would help the LAF "strengthen its capabilities". The deal has drawn mixed reactions in Lebanon given the size of the grant - the largest ever received by the country - and the potential political ramifications attached. Saudi Arabia supports Lebanon's 14 March parliamentary coalition that opposes the Shia group Hizbullah, which is supported by Riyadh's chief regional rival, Iran.
