A second test of the lAI-Boeing Arrow 3 exo-atmospheric ballistic missile interceptor was carried out in Israel on 3 January by the Israel Missile Defence Organisation and the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA). A statement described the second fly-out test as a "major milestone" that "provides confidence in the future Israeli capabilities to defeat the developing ballistic missile threat". Arrow 3 is designed to intercept longer-range ballistic missiles by deploying a kill vehicle into outer space that can manoeuvre so it collides with an approaching threat. Exo-atmospheric interceptions minimise the fallout from incoming nuclear warheads and also provide time to engage any surviving ballistic missiles with shorter-range systems, such as the Arrow 2 system.
