The US Army plans to install a new ground-based sense and avoid (GBSAA) network at five installations by 2016 to ensure its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can deconflict with other aircraft in domestic airspace. Viva Austin, product director for the army's Unmanned Systems Airspace Integration Concepts (USAIC), told IHS Jane's that the army completed a preliminary design review of the GBSAA network in November. The service is now moving ahead with installing the system at five sites where the army's largest UAV, the MQ-1C Gray Eagle, is flown.
