The US Army plans to shelve its Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) for at least the next three or four years as the programme, once dubbed a top priority by service leadership, falls victim to tightening budgets. "Do we need a new infantry fighting vehicle [IFV]? Yes. Can we afford a new infantry fighting vehicle? No," Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno said during a 23 January meeting sponsored by the Association of the United States Army. "What I'm hoping for is technology will continue to allow us [to advance] so three to four years from now we'll be able to build an infantry fighting vehicle that is absolutely necessary," the general said.
