India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has barred 27 domestic and overseas materiel vendors from participating in the four-day Defexpo 2014 exhibition that opens in New Delhi on 6 February. MoD officials on 29 January said this includes 15 firms under inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for wrongdoing and 12 that have been blacklisted over alleged corruption in the past five years. Prominent amongst the former category is Italy's Finmeccanica group, which had booked space in the biennial exhibition and had paid the participating fee. Affected Finmeccanica subsidiaries include AgustaWestland, Oto Melara, Selex, and White-head Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS), all of which are vying for Indian defence contracts worth an estimated USD6 billion.
